Source- blis[dot]gov However experts say the following could be the main reasons of making the graduates unemployable or not a right fit to the role, and also they are providing solutions on how to overcome such kinds of problems and become eligible to grab the opportunities.
Here are the top “7” reasons why people struggle to get into the right career and finally end up being jobless.
There can be n number of reasons when a graduate is not employable or not suitable for the role.
Not Understanding Their weaknesses
Many colleges passed out don’t realize the importance of identifying their weaknesses and working on it, in a survey conducted it was found that many are not getting hired because of poor communication, poor presentation skills, and poor soft skills, although they were technically sound and great. There are companies which do look for all these in a candidate.
Solution: Some of the candidates put an effort into understanding or would realize after attending a couple of interviews and start fixing the problems, meanwhile many are unable to figure out despite attending a couple of interviews or many times they can do a comparison study with others who are succeeding in finding the job, but they are so dumb and never pay attention and despite all these they may be easily prone to stress. Identifying your weak points and working on them is crucial if you are not able to identify it by any mean by yourself seek the help of your friends, ask them to access you, ask them to conduct a mock interview so that you will be able to understand your problem. Seek the advice of the consultants if you need any help on this.
Not Being prepared for the Skills needed for the role
Some of the skills you learn as a hobby or for no reason may help you in your career and think of the good that can happen when you have already identified your dream job and acquiring some skills around it, even if they are basic skills that should still help. Recruiters feel happy to hire the freshers when they get to know that you have certain skills which can be used in the work from day one when you are hired and you will have very high preferences.
Tip: Presentation skills, Microsoft Excel skills, and some other computer skills that are applicable everywhere and this would help. In case if you have a specific thing in mind, you picking up the basic skills around it would help you find the job easily. Speak to people working in similar roles, to people who have knowledge around it or alternatively consider exploring the internet, there is tons of information available on the internet.
When Don’t Work On skills That help in all kinds of role
There are certain types of skills which you may need in every kind of role regardless of the responsibilities you handle and you have to pick those kinds of courses or learning paths which can help you always and may get lots of opportunities.
Tip: Learn excel skills, presentation skills, improve oral and written communication, learn the computer basics, learn tools like Photoshop, Illustrator, video editing tools, basic knowledge about the internet and internet technologies.
Wrong illusions around the industry/domain
Many people make a big mistake and this one thing spoils them and keeps them unhappy throughout their life. Many time people make assumptions that a specific domain is great and has more opportunities just because all his neighbors or all his seniors have got into it, which may not be correct, moreover regardless of the market demand you may have to assess yourself for the suitability for the role and you have to take the step accordingly. For example: just because everyone is becoming painters or photographers and earning well that doesn’t mean even you have to become a photographer even though you’re not the right fit or not interested. In many cases, people do a mistake here and end up being disappointed throughout their life. You may try and get into it but then you won’t be able to do well in it until and unless you are smart from several perspectives where you can learn everything or anything and can do well in it without losing interest or caliber working further in it.
- High supply and less demand
This is another big reason across several industries where professionals for that specific role are found abundantly, but then meanwhile the industry may not need those many numbers of professionals. You may have to do research, understand thoroughly before you finalize the domain you want to perceive your career in.
- In the wrong markets (Go to places where there are opportunities)
Lets understand this by an example, The place you live or you search for opportunities may have huge demand for mechanical engineers and this doesn’t mean you find similar kind of opportunities for the software professionals as well and in case if you are a software engineer that may not be right place and you need to figure out the right places for you, so that you will be able to find the jobs easily.
- Poor understanding of the opportunities or growth and making wrong decisions
Many professionals make wrong assumptions around the job/role and responsibilities even before they completely understand about it or about it against their skills and capabilities. Many refuse to take up the career path in the profile for which they are already offered a job because of the wrong illusions or due to biased decisions.Let me explain this with an example, this is something I have witnessed in my life, Once a fresher who is not that suitable for the role of software developer, but his skills can help him do great in Digital marketing but then he doesn’t want to get into it due to the wrong illusion he had that software developer is the highest profile, in fact, digital marketing allows them to grow very quickly and hold bright positions and good salaries when they possess skills needed for this role. This guy struggled for several years and finally with rigorous practice found a job in dev, but then not found it to be interesting, his growth is stagnant, his salaries are not great and many times he hesitates to ask for a hike as he himself is not satisfied with his performance in the role.
More Concerned about the temporary gains
There are many kinds of profiles which doesn’t pay much to the freshers in the initial stages as they are going to pave a path to great profiles, but then this shouldn’t make you refuse to join to those kinds of jobs. 60% of the experienced and well-earning professionals today must have gone through it and they all have made a successful career.
Look for Quick financial stability
No job gives a financial stability as you expect in your first year of working and you making any calculations around it in order to pay your bills or take up family responsibilities and trying to match the same with your salary and expecting a proportionate amount of salary may put you in trouble and hence we just you have to take up the job if you have found that one you are looking for, you can earn as per your expectations by making a move to other organizations once you are experienced.
Not Applying for the jobs on the right platforms
Applying for the jobs on the right platforms is very important there are many portals specifically meant for respective domains or industry and you publishing your profile can easily gain some traction instead of posting it on some random or generic job portals. For instance, you have a job portal which is specifically meant for digital marketing jobs and the complete platform is about digital marketing.
The second mistake that most of them do is not knowing about how to upload it to the job portals with appropriate information or the right information, and also not updating it frequently pushed the profile to the bottom and there will be very fewer chances of recruiters finding you.
Summary:
Many professionals especially freshers don’t realize the importance of working on the factors they lag and despite just try to work on something that may or may not help, the points discussed in the article and working on them for sure would help professionals to get them on the right track. There can be many more silly reasons that the professionals make and don’t get hired and those are not covered in the article, for instance, wearing a casual dress or some odd attire and attending the interview.
