The Scrum Framework can be explained as a procedure that takes place only due to the occurrence of an event sequence along with the corresponding artifacts. Such an event sequence is known as a Scrum Event. Scrum Events can be termed as events that are time-boxed or time-limited. What this means is that – each Scrum Event will have its maximum amount of duration.
It should be realized that Scrum Events generally promote transparency among the Scrum Team members, who are specifically involved in the project. Scrum Events can be divided into the following segments:
- The Sprint
- Sprint Planning
- Daily Scrum
- Sprint Review
- Sprint Retrospective

Who Can Attend Scrum Events?
Scrum Events are said to be a vital aspect of the product development process and these events will define the way the Scrum Team will move forward. Meetings that take place within events will assist the team to reflect, pause and thereby re-adjust the overall course of action.
The Scrum Events are attended by the Scrum Master, Product Owner, and Developers. Sometimes stakeholders and management can also chime in, but that’s optional.
List Of All The Scrum Events
It should be perceived that all of the below-mentioned events must be repeated in a fixed cycle duration so that what is intended from the framework can be seamlessly achieved. Such a cycle is known as the Sprint, which is otherwise known as the ‘container event’. All of the related events must be completed within a given timebox or time frame. As Sprint is a very crucial process, precautions are taken so that no changes either endanger the Sprint Goal or decrease the quality. Also, the Scope is clarified with the Product Owner.
Each Sprint can be considered as an individual short project as it enables predictability by ensuring inspection at least every calendar month though it’s generally considered that giving more time to a certain task produces better results in the case of Sprint the longer it is the more damage it does to the product as the Sprint Goal may become invalid or the complexity and the risk may increase; So short Sprints are preferred as it reduces the cost and effort to a smaller time frame.
Only the Product Owner has the authority to cancel the Sprint as sometimes the Sprint Goal may become obsolete.
2. Sprint Planning
Sprint Planning is responsible for kick-starting each Sprint process. This is the time when the Scrum Team along with the Product Owner discusses the Product Backlog items that will be included in the Sprint process.
Even though the Product Owner will have the say in terms of the prioritization of the Product Backlog items, the Scrum Team members will always be encouraged to raise issues, respond and even push back any changes, whenever necessary.
Once done, the Scrum Team will forecast the number of Product Backlog items that can be deliverable within the Sprint process – depending upon the team’s resources, time, knowledge, and other essential factors. The main outcome of the Sprint Planning event is to obtain a Sprint Goal as well as a backlog, which is not only realistic but achievable.
After the selection of the Product Backlog, the Developers are tasked to create the Definition of Done(DoD) which is the task of breaking down the items into smaller tasks, though the process of doing it is left to the discretion of the Developers. The Sprint Goal along with the planning and Product Backlog is collectively referred to as Sprint Backlog.
3. Daily Scrum
There’s no denying that the process of Scrum always seeks to efficiently utilize your resources & time, which is why the Daily Scrum is no exception. It should be perceived that the Daily Scrum is time-limited for up to 15 minutes. This is a useful technique because teams can make the meetings short, exciting, and useful.
The Daily Scrum is also a great opportunity for the Scrum Team members to check in on each other and thereby assess the progression towards the ultimate goal. If any change is required, the same will be discussed within this Scrum Event but it would be highly misleading to think that Daily Scrum is the only time the Developers meet to adjust their plan, they often meet during the day to discuss adapting or re-planning the rest of the Sprint’s work.
4. Sprint Review
The Sprint Review event helps the Scrum Team to reflect on how they can become much more productive, thereby fine-tuning their behavior accordingly.
The and is timeboxed to a maximum of 4 hours for a one-month Sprint though for the short events the time given to Sprint Review also decreases. It should be realized that the main aim is not to get everything correct on the first try but to always constantly improve. The Sprint Review can help in making that job possible for the Scrum Team members.
This event usually takes place on the final day of the Sprint process, which allows the Scrum Team to have the ideal opportunity to showcase the progression to the stakeholders. The feedback that is gathered will then be implemented accordingly in future Sprint procedures.
5. Sprint Retrospective
This is the final event that takes place in a Sprint procedure. This is the time when the entire team will review the entire Sprint process and thereby learn about the aspects that can be improved in future Sprints. The team inspects how the last Sprint went in terms of tools, DoD, processes, and interactions, and then the team discusses what went well and what problems were faced during the Sprint.
It doesn’t matter how good the Scrum Team is, there will always be chances for improvement, which is why the Scrum Team should dedicate their time to discussing, identifying, and planning future Sprints by taking into account the results of the current one. The event is limited to a maximum of three hours for a one-month sprint though for shorter events the time given to Sprint Retrospective also decreases.
Since this event will be collaborative, the team along with the Scrum Master and Product Owner should attend it.
